DIMA is the Dublin International Insurance & Management Association. It was set up in 1990, after the first international insurance entity had been established in Ireland the previous year. DIMA is a non-profit organisation which represents the interests of non-life insurance, non-life reinsurance, life reinsurance and captive management companies conducting international business in Ireland.
DIMA acts as a representative body for its members, at the same time promoting best practice among practitioners. Alongside a full-time CEO, the DIMA board of directors, elected from senior representatives of member companies, provides a cross-section of the different types of business operating in Ireland. The board of directors meets on a monthly basis, and its work is supported by a system of sub-committees which are focussed on specific business sectors or initiatives. These sub-committees are open to all members, who also convene at quarterly general meetings.
DIMA consults its membership extensively on issues affecting the marketplace as a whole. In particular, DIMA has been central to the consultative process surrounding the current implementation of the Reinsurance Directive into domestic legislation in Ireland.
DIMA has a successful educational programme, administered by the Insurance Institute of Ireland, focussing on the needs of the international sector in Ireland ( http://www.insurance-institute.ie/training/faculty.html). It has close links with the University of Limerick, where it sponsors an annual essay competition for final year students studying insurance-related subjects, and is developing similar relationships with other third level educational establishments.
